A sunny stroll around the Kollwitzkiez

A cute statue in a window in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin

It was a bright sunny day when I woke up this morning so I decided to make the most of it and instead of studying German got outside earlier in the morning.  First, I walked the streets between Torststrasse, Danziger Strasse, Schönhauser Allee / Kollwitzstrasse and Prenzlauer Allee.  And after a trip to Curry 36 for lunch I was back on the streets between Torstrasse, Schwedter Strasse, Weinbergsweg / Kastanianallee and Schönhauser Allee.

I was surprised at the variety of the Street Art I saw today.  I have read a lot about the gentrifictaion of the area around Kollwitzplatz so for some reason I thought there would be less to see but that wasn’t the case, particularly around Saarbrücker Strasse.

As well as the street art I saw: two hi-fis, a TV and an armchair left on the streets; a burnt out car and a radio station with CDs on the window ledge (I wasn’t sure whether they were there for passersby to take but with hindsight I wish I’d just picked them up).

Unfortunately, the battery in my camera ran out before I completed my walk so I’ll have to go back to get some snaps that I missed out on today.

But that’s not too much of a hardship.  I can understand why the area has become so popular.  There is a wide variety of shops, restaurants and other places of interest around and whilst the streets are generally quiet and peaceful there are good transport links nearby.

It’s Fashion Week in Berlin and I think I saw some models going to / from a casting whilst I was travelling back to Rosa-Luxemburg Platz after my lunch at Curry 36.  They got on the U-Bahn at Potsdamer Platz and off at Stadtmitte.  Four tall, beautiful, Eastern European-looking girls carrying folios.
