Currywurst and Chips at Curry 61, a Currywurst Imbiss in Berlin Mitte

Yesterday I continued my quest to find the ‘Best of the Wurst‘ in Berlin with a trip to Curry 61.

Curry 61 is on Oranienburger Strasse, a stone’s throw from the shops of Hackesher Markt and therefore in a prime position for catering to the tourist crowd.

I bought my Currywurst and Chips, opting for mit Darm (with skin on the sausage), and took it to nearby Monbijou Park to eat in the sunshine.

The chips were great and there was a nice smoky flavour to the sausage but I’m sorry to say that the sauce was too sweet and lacking spice for me.  That said, it filled a hole and gave me some energy to tackle a trip to the Supermarkt for a food shop.

I have trouble picking a favorite currywurst. It’s not that they all taste the same (I definitely prefer spicier v. sweeter) but that what makes a place special to me seems to be the memories I associate with it. The first place I ever went next to the A&O hostel is still my favorite. I will have to follow your journey to find another stand to fall in love with.

I know what you mean. That’s why Curry 36 will always have a special place in my heart even if I find somewhere that I think is better (I sometimes think Curry 66 might be). I was so excited to be in Berlin eating Currywurst there on my first ever day in the city!

Ahh! I’ve been there. My friend lives a few blocks away and so I found myself there quite a number of times during my last visit to Berlin. Great pick. I love the sense of community that happens there, too! Love your blog, btw. = )

It’s a popular Imbiss but for me, not the best. Thanks for the kind words.

When I visited Curry61, I had an enlightening conversation with the gentleman there. Judging by the convo, I don’t think he expected me to be okay with spoken German. The currywurst fit the bill, but yeah, the sauce was a bit on the sweet side.

Henry, I’m glad you saw the post as it was one of your previous comments and then reading your post that led me to try this particular Imbiss. I always try to have conversations in German as much as possible and can normally get by when ordering food etc but your German is obviously a far higher standard than mine!

Hi, I think it’s the usual which can occur: putting in an effort to have a short conversation in (broken) German can go a long way. 🙂

In my limited experience of tasting CurryWurst I have found them to be too sweet too. Any tips on a good place to eat “spicier” Wursts? Thanks!

Curry 36 definitely has a bit more spice in the house sauce but for something really spicy it would have to be Curry 66. They have a range of 9 sauces – check out my post for the full details, including the names and spiciness in Scoville units.

If you want to give Curry 61 another chance, in another part of the city, check the one at Mehringdamm, next to the renowed Mustafa gemüse kebap!

I think you may mean Curry 36, which is one of my favourites. I was excited to see preparation underway for a new Curry 36 imbiss at Zoo station when I was there the other day!

..aand I think you’re totally right!
I’m definitely bad at names, sorry…
So, a new Curry 36 is under construction, that’s intresting! 🙂
