AXEL VOID

Born in Miami and raised in Spain, AXEL VOID (Alejandro Hugo Dorda Mevs) was based in Berlin for some time before returning to his native Miami.  He describes the incredible story behind this Hitler Youth piece at YAAM on his website:

A few years ago my computer broke down. I went to a repair shop in Berlin and met this older man that ran the place himself. There were other people and he must have seen that I didn’t have much money so with my poor German and his poor English he sat me down and explained how to fix the computer myself. I spent the afternoon with him, and among other things he told me his story. He was the son of one of the Nazi generals, and was raised in the Hitlerjugend (Hitler’s Youth). He explained how natural his training seemed, but by the time he grew up and had to take part in the war, he couldn’t do it. They ended up kicking him out of the force and he left the country. He only came back to germany after the war was finished.
He never charged me anything, this wall is dedicated to him.

A new year, a new selection of remarkable street art from Berlin to feast your eyes on, including some new artists as well as some very familiar faces.  As usual, where an artist has featured here before you can click on their name to see more of their work.

Dave the Chimp

According to his website, Dave the Chimp was ‘born in an egg on a mountain top’.  As well as decorating the streets with his quirky characters his artwork adorns skateboards and snowboards.

He has also turned his hand to directing music videos and one of my Berlin Songs series, Robots in Disguise – I Live in Berlin features snippets of the video he directed for the band’s song Girl.

El Bocho

Judging by the response to my Tourist Information From Tina Berlina post, I’m not the only one who loves this character by El Bocho.  I’ve also thrown in a Little Lucy for good measure.

Otto Schade

This baby ‘using’ a policeman’s helmet is very different from the other Otto Schade pieces I’ve seen in Berlin and London and I LOVE IT.

In the Belly of a Whale – El Bocho

Berlin-based Street Artist El Bocho At Work On The Street In Berlin

Prolific Berlin-based street artist El Bocho speaks to Andreas Lamoth and Frederic Leitzke about his work and his motivations in 2013 in a new episode of their award-winning documentary In the Belly of a Whale.

You may recognise a number of the pieces featured as El Bocho has appeared many many times on andBerlin.  Street art from his Citizen series, Little Lucy and most recently Tina Berlina characters pop up regularly on the streets of Berlin.  You can see more of his work on his website and Facebook page.

Tourist Information From Tina Berlina by El Bocho

Tina Berlina - 'Top Secret Info' - Street Art by El Bocho in Berlin

It was around the start of 2014 that I first noticed Tina Berlina, a new character from prolific Berlin Street Artist El Bocho.

Tina has been popping up on the streets of Berlin this year offering advice to tourists and giving German lessons.  Unfortunately, I’ve missed German Lesson 3.

Tina Berlina - 'Beware of Boring Areas': Street Art by El Bocho in Berlin Tina Berlina - 'Don't Believe The Dealer' - Street Art by El Bocho in Berlin Tina Berlina - 'Don't Go To The Oktoberfest' - Street Art by El Bocho in Berlin Tina Berlina - German Lesson 1 - Street Art by El Bocho in Berlin

Translation: Is there also something by Banksy here?

Tina Berlina - German Lesson 4 - Street Art by El Bocho in Berlin

Translation: I would like to buy the loft…please.

There’s lots of El Bocho Street Art from his Citizens and Little Lucy series elsewhere on andBerlin and here’s hoping that Tina Berlina keeps appearing on the walls of Berlin, offering her pearls of wisdom to the city’s many tourists.

El Bocho

El Bocho must be one of the most prolific Street Artists in Berlin and also one of the most popular. This paste-up from his ‘Citizens’ series only lasted a few days, presumably because some idiot decided to take a souvenir home – as long as Jack’s alright, ey?

Prost / Dave the Chimp / Käptn

It’s always good to find Street Art pieces that complement each other rather than compete. These three characters from Prost, Dave the Chimp and Käptn seem to be playing out a scene in a Street Art soap opera.

ALANIZ

Argentine-born, Berlin-based Street Artist ALANIZ’s style is evolving.  The first pieces I saw from the artist were stencils but recently he has been producing an increasing number of large-scale murals, painted with rollers, like this two-storey Mother and Child in Kreuzberg.

Mother and Child - Street Art by ALANIZ in Berlin

TEJN

Danish Street Artist TEJN creates sculptures from salvaged Iron found on the streets.  A number of pieces from his ‘Locked On’ project have popped up around Berlin including this huge character, which seems to me like it may be a Norse god, a larger version of a previous sculpture on Kastanianallee.
