Trattoria del Corso – Exceptional Italian food outside the Berlin Ring

If you’ve got cravings for incredible Italian food in Berlin and don’t want to break the bank, I’d recommend you check out Trattoria del Corso, a large and popular restaurant on the Hauptstrasse in Friedenau.

Where’s Friedenau you ask? Sandwiched between Schöneberg and Steglitz, it may not be a part of Berlin you’re familiar with but believe me, if you’re willing to venture (400m) outside the ring, you’ll be rewarded at Trattoria del Corso with some of the best Italian food in Berlin.

If you’re lucky, on a Berlin summer evening, you’ll get a table on the terrace to the side of the restaurant, covered with a series of large, white sun umbrellas.  The waiting staff here are busy so don’t expect overly attentive service but they are friendly and generally efficient.

As in many Italian restaurants fresh bread is brought to the table with the drinks.  It’s wonderfully soft and fluffy with a crisp and flavourful crust.  Olive oil and Balsamico Vinegar are provided on the table for dipping.

The menu has a wide selection of Antipasti, Salads, Pizzas and Pasta dishes and don’t forget to check out the chef’s recommendations – an assortment of specials that changes weekly.

Unless you haven’t eaten for a week or plan to roll home I would suggest skipping the starters – the portions here are generous.

The pizzas are massive – so big in fact that the plates can’t contain them and you’ll need to bring your appetite to finish a whole one. As prices range from €6.80 to €8.30 this represents exceptional value for money.  If you’re a fan of the spicy kick of chillies you’ll fall in love with the spicy pizza oil – the good news if you do is that you can take a bottle home for €12.50.

On a recent visit, Steffi opted to have the Pizza Diavola topped with an egg – the waiter didn’t bat an eyelid at the request and the total price was €8.30.  The only disappointment, Steffi hadn’t brought her A-game and couldn’t eat it all!

I chose the Lamb Rump Steak with Rosemary potatoes and beans from the chef’s recommendations.  The meat was perfectly cooked.  It was tender and succulent and complemented perfectly by the vegetables and a light jus.  I had no problem clearing my plate but felt full and satisfied afterwards.

So, make the most of the extensive and relatively inexpensive transport system in Berlin, take the S-Bahn (S41 / S42 / S45 / S46) or U-Bahn (U4) to Innsbrucker Platz, and treat yourself to delicious Italian food at Trattoria del Corso.

A Magica – Incredible Pizza in Berlin

A Magica, which opened on Greifenhagener Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg in 2007 is run by Sebastiano and Andreas, who met in Berlin in the early 90s.

According to the restaurant’s website, Sebastiano the chef, is a pizza acrobat and has competed at national and international competitions, displaying his pizza tossing skills.

This small and friendly Italian pizzeria has an impressive array of pizzas on the menu but very little else – if you can’t find the pizza that matches your mood you can even create your own.

Both times I’ve been to A Magica I have had the Focosa – a pizza with tomatoes, Mozzarella, peppers (Paprika), Taleggio cheese, olives and spicy salami – washed down with a half litre of Wernesgrüner Pilsner.

The first time I went to A Magica, after I had spent the day at Schloss Charlottenburg, I described it as ‘the best pizza I’ve ever had‘.

On my latest visit yesterday the pizza wasn’t quite so spectacular but was still incredibly tasty.

The spicy Salami (scharfe Salami) has a real kick to it, so as well as one of the tastiest, this is also one of the spiciest pizzas I’ve eaten. The beer was enough to put out the fire though.

A Magica is a popular little restaurant and rightly so. It is especially popular with Prenzlauer Berg families according to some of the reviews I’ve read, though I haven’t seen many children in my two visits.

A total bill of €11 for a pizza and a beer represents excellent value for money in my opinion and I would have no hesitation in recommending A Magica for a tasty lunch or evening meal – you might want to book first though.

Caramello Pizza

Caramello on Hufelandstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg serves the most amazingly tasty pizza by the slice with a thin and slightly crisp base.

Soon after I arrived in Berlin I decided that one way to see the city and perhaps a few surprises was to pick a section of the map and walk the streets in it in a grid.  And that’s how I spent an enjoyable couple of hours last Friday.

I chose a group of streets bordered by Am Friedrichshain, Greifswalder Strasse, Danziger Strasse and Kniproderstrasse.

I had almost finished ‘walking the grid’ and feeling peckish had started to think about lunch when I came out of Esmarchstrasse on Hufelandstrasse.  Perfect, there on the corner right in front of me was Caramello.

All of the pavement tables were taken and there was a line of people snaking out of the door – good signs – I took a few more turns to see the last streets in my chosen section of the map and came back about 10 minutes later.

By this point, there were a few less people in the queue and a couple of seats free.

At the counter in Cramello, pizzas are laid out by the slice, partly cooked and popped in the oven to finish cooking and warm through once you make your selection.  They are available to take away or served on wooden boards (like cheese boards) for those eating in.

I decided on a slice of Spicy Salami and a slice of Ruccola (Rocket), which cost €5, and took my board to a table outside.

Great pizza for me is one of those simply satisfying meals – at its best when it hasn’t been over-complicated and at Caramello the toppings are generous but nicely balanced.

My only criticism is that the Rocket would be better added to the pizza after it came out of the oven but that’s a minor niggle.


The pizza is so good that I was back again on Sunday for another couple of slices before I strolled to Mauerpark for my first experience of Bearpit Karaoke.

For those with a sweet tooth, Caramello also has an ice cream counter and next time I’m going to treat myself to the Vollmilchschokolade (milk chocolate).
