Vhils in London

Street Art by Vhils at the entrance to the Leake Street Tunnel at Cans Festival 2 - September 2009

I featured Vhils’ work in Berlin in my Vhils – Go Forth post but I thought it was about time he appeared here again.   Here are a few photos of his work in London, including some pieces from the Leake Street tunnel for the Cans Festival.

I spent ages trying to find images from his Scratching the Surface show at the Lazarides Gallery but no joy.  I know I was there but maybe I didn’t have my camera.

For anyone unfamiliar with his work, Vhils (real name Alexandre Farto) is a Portuguese Street Artist.  His most recognisable works are created with chisels and small explosive charges, which he uses to remove the surface of walls to reveal his images.

If you like what you see you might want to check out his website or the excellent book of his work published by Gestalten.

These are so haunting, I really like his work.

His work is consistently great and he uses a technique that I haven’t seen before. It’s well worth checking out the videos of him at work that are floating around.
